{"id":780,"date":"2017-02-17T08:00:15","date_gmt":"2017-02-17T06:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/?p=780"},"modified":"2018-07-06T15:15:03","modified_gmt":"2018-07-06T12:15:03","slug":"the-golan-in-return-for-iran-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/?p=780","title":{"rendered":"The Golan in Return for Iran"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Donald Trump\u2019s election as U.S. president has created a real opportunity to reopen the debate on the issue of Israel\u2019s \u201ccompensation\u201d in view of the nuclear agreement with Iran.<\/p>\n<p>Israel must reformulate its strategy to ensure its sovereignty in the Golan Heights and persuade the new administration that there\u2019s an inseparable link between Israel\u2019s sovereignty in the Golan and curbing Iran\u2019s aspirations in the Middle East.<br \/>\nTrump understands well the danger that Iran poses for the region. He has described the nuclear agreement as \u201ca disaster for Israel\u201d and he is evidently well aware of the need to balance the equation that ensued.<\/p>\n<div class=\"getty aligncenter\"><a id='rJp-fHEKShlIUfqDC5c13g' class='gie-single' href='http:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/589080034' target='_blank' style='color:#a7a7a7;text-decoration:none;font-weight:normal !important;border:none;display:inline-block;'>Embed from Getty Images<\/a><script>window.gie=window.gie||function(c){(gie.q=gie.q||[]).push(c)};gie(function(){gie.widgets.load({id:'rJp-fHEKShlIUfqDC5c13g',sig:'L_bOUZkrYG4RhElam3GBCNvmy_aovAWFYmG0vnVnWu4=',w:'459px',h:'308px',items:'589080034',caption: false ,tld:'com',is360: false })});<\/script><script src='\/\/embed-cdn.gettyimages.com\/widgets.js' charset='utf-8' async><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Netanyahu\u2019s request that the United States recognize Israel\u2019s sovereignty in the Golan indicates that Israel understands that demanding advanced weapons in response to Iran\u2019s growing strength isn\u2019t enough. The appropriate strategic compensation for the nuclear agreement, as far as Israel is concerned, is setting the buffer zone in Israel\u2019s sovereignty permanently, so that it cuts off the Tehran-Ein Gev axis on the outskirts of Quneitra, and not on the Kinneret shores. This is the only way to restrain Iran\u2019s conventional aggression potential on the other side of the Golan border.<\/p>\n<p>International recognition of Israel\u2019s sovereignty on the Golan, which makes up only <a href=\"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/insights-international-law\/\">one percent<\/a> of what was until recently Syria, isn\u2019t only an Israeli interest, but first of all an interest of all those who wish to stabilize the region and block Iran\u2019s growing influence in it. The moderate Sunni axis states won\u2019t fight a move that means exacting a territorial price from the Shi\u2019ite axis of evil.<\/p>\n<p>Above all, reality on the ground is stronger than past fixations. There is no horizon on the Golan Heights but the Israeli one. Neither radical Sunni factions and organizations nor an Iran-Hezbollah-Assad foothold in the Kinneret will allow for stabilizing the region and rehabilitating it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_498\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-498\" style=\"width: 1014px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-498\" src=\"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05df-1-1024x717.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"717\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05df-1-1024x717.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thegolan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05df-1-400x280.jpg 400w, https:\/\/thegolan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05df-1-768x538.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thegolan.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/\u05d0\u05d9\u05e8\u05d0\u05df-1.jpg 1147w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Iran&#8217;s takeover of the Middle East<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The international community must come to terms with the geostrategic implications of the Middle East\u2019s collapse. The Middle East\u2019s borders as we knew them in the last century are evaporating before our eyes. Recognizing Israel\u2019s sovereignty on the Golan is a self-evident move as part of reshaping the region by demarcation, especially in the Syrian-Iraqi area, which has irreversibly changed.<\/p>\n<p>The Trump administration\u2019s potential to hold a constructive debate with Russia about the Middle East, as well as Bashar Assad\u2019s complete dependence on Russia can serve Israel\u2019s interests in the Golan. Israel must strive to coordinate its interests with the United States and Russia regarding an arrangement for the time after the war in Syria so that its needs are considered in the discourse among the powers on the future of Syria and the Assad regime.<\/p>\n<p>The issue of an <a href=\"https:\/\/thegolan.org\/publications\/american-recognition\/\">American recognition<\/a> of Israel\u2019s sovereignty in the Golan was raised for discussion in the Trump-Netanyahu meeting on Wednesday.
